Know what’s not in it
The words on a bottle label are worth understanding. Open any term for a plain-English explanation of what it is and why we test for it.
Estrogenic activity (EA)
Estrogenic activity (EA) describes how some substances can behave like estrogen, or block estrogen, once they are in the body. EA is not limited to plastic: some glass and silicone products can also release substances with EA. A test for estrogenic activity looks for that behavior in the finished product, rather than checking for one named chemical at a time.
BPA
Bisphenol A, a chemical used to harden some plastics. It is one of the substances known to show estrogenic activity, which is why so many bottles are labeled BPA-free. Our finished bottles are tested after production.
Phthalates
A group of chemicals added to plastic to keep it soft and flexible. They are studied as endocrine disruptors, meaning they can interfere with the body’s own hormone signals.
Nitrosamines
Compounds that can form during the manufacturing of some rubber and latex products, including certain bottle nipples. Our materials are free from them.
PVC
Polyvinyl chloride, a plastic that usually needs added softeners such as phthalates to stay flexible. It is not used anywhere in a Pure Start bottle.
Latex
A natural rubber used in some older bottle nipples. It is a known allergen for a small number of people, so our nipples are made from medical-grade silicone instead.
